Sincere, unapologetic gratitude
goes a long way towards
opening our hearts.
And there is lots to be grateful for,
lots!

Like snakes, lizards shed their skin.
This one is in the middle of that shedding,
frozen almost, not moving.
It must be a difficult process,
making them vulnerable,
like us when we go through changes -
shedding the layers of our defenses,
opening up to the world and love!
When I was much younger
I used to take vacation days from myself!
I would pretend to be the person that I really wanted to be!
It has taken most of my life
to shed the things that were in the way of my being that person.
But here I am, most days,
the person I always wanted to be!
(Too bad I couldn't get new skin too!)

Resembling luminescent jewels,
the colors of the ocean at sunset
on a calm evening,
raise the spirit,
like the sails of a great ship filling with a welcome breeze.
Filling the heart with Love!
Happy Valentine's Day!

What I know - what I know is -
Love will find a way.
Conflict in your life?
Say this -
Love will find a way.
Anxious?
Say this in your heart and mind -
Love will find a way.
It does.
It will.
Somehow it opens your heart and reminds you of the love there.
There is a song that goes like the first line of this post but I can't find it!
But there are 2 others with the title of "Love Will Find a Way" by Pablo Cruise and Lionel Ritchie.
In any event, Love will find a way!

I wanted to write about the unsettling times we find ourselves in
and then there was that date,
September 11, 2021
staring me in the eye.
In 2001, almost a week after that horrible day,
I was on a sailboat in Provincetown Harbor
and witnessed the most magnificent sunset
caused by the dust in the air all the way from
New York City to Cape Cod,
from that terrible tragedy at the World Trade Center Towers.
I lived in Provincetown at the time and my friend invited me out on the water.
Planes were still grounded and it was eerily quiet and peaceful, calm and beautiful.
We talked about how the U.S. behaved in the world
and how that created more enemies than friends.
The Country stood still for a while -
collective grief - shock - compassion - empathy.
And you know the rest of the story.
They said,
"Get on with your lives." "Go shopping."
We'll start a war or two and make it right.
A primitive response lacking insight, intelligence, even compassion for the victims.
It's not what their families wanted.
It wasn't misguided -
it was exactly what some people wanted.
Will America ever be the Beacon of Democracy she promised to be?
Not like that.
Not like that.

Can you be stressed and joyful at the same time?
Worried and happy at the same time?
Yes
and
Yes!
It takes some living and loving and forgiving
to arrive at a time in your life
when your emotions balance
without effort.
Joy and happiness can rise to the top like bubbles in water.
Stress is still stress and worry is still worried,
but they're paired with your innate joy
and they don't eat away your minutes and hours-
your days and nights.
The edges are smoothed and softened.
You can still find gladness in the little things
and laugh at your clumsy self.

What I have been trying not to say out loud,
is that there are blessings or gifts hidden in tragedies,
and these gifts may not be obvious for some time to come,
but they are there.
If we can make a commitment not to let the anger and helplessness
allow us to disconnect,
and instead turn to our friends and families,
and really see them in that deep way that keeps love alive,
then that compassion spreads to our neighbors, and the person behind the counter,
and we become part of the force that moves us away from the madness,
and towards creating a loving and compassionate world.
Be gentle with each other and kind and open.

It's that time of year -
in a very odd year _
when emotions are raw and memories haunt you.
Riding waves of feelings,
not knowing where they come from,
or why,
or how long,
you hang on.
Storms come and they go,
and you hang on.
You hang on.
And they go.
Life is still life -
imperfectly perfect.
Stay safe,
and patient
and perfect.

How can a year as strange as 2020
appear to be whizzing by?
Already Thanksgiving!
And still grateful -
for the moon and stars and planets
(especially this one!) -
grateful for blue skies and rain
trees and flowers
wild waves and calm.
Grateful to be alive and well
and loving
and loved.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Here I am surrounded by giant old oak trees,
dripping with spanish moss,
living with a joyful dog
and a handsome cat,
while it feels like the world is coming apart at the seams.
It is not.
The birds still sing.
The frogs still croak and slap themselves onto the windows at night.
The moon rises and shines.
The sun too.
All that is worrying us will change,
and soon.
One way or the other.
To quote Wendell Barry,
Be joyful even though you have considered all the facts.
Be joyful and see the world around you with fresh eyes and love.
"Love is why we have hope"
Love your world!
And hope for the very best for all of us.
Inspired by the book by Anne Lamott, Almost Everything, Notes on Hope.
The quote about love is from the back cover and the Wendell Barry quote is found on the inside front cover.
She is fearless and funny and inspiring!

Collectively it is time that we imagine a better world.
No matter what happens in the next months or years,
it is time to put our minds on better things.
Call it the power of positive thinking,
of visualizing,
of collective prayer -
it all works and can change the world.
Psychopathic leaders of politics and industry - be warned -
it is time for the Human takeover of our world.
Time to imagine a world where we live harmoniously with the earth,
harmoniously with each other - near and far,
harmoniously with all creatures -great and small.
A world in partnership.
A world of compassion and love and generosity.
If it fits in your mind,
it fits in your world.
We are more than what we can imagine.
Collectively it's time to imagine
what comes after -
to dream big and have faith in the human heart,
in the human desire for connection.

Never met a stranger
When I heard that sentiment many years ago,
I spent several days, weeks, months scratching my head.
What on earth did it mean?
Then it hit me like a ton of bricks - of course -
none of us are strangers to one another.
As Joni Mitchell put it so many years ago,
"I see something of myself in everyone..."
All of our vulnerabilities and insecurities,
all of our hubris and self righteousness -
we all share these things.
Anxiety, arrogance, shame, hate, joy, love, ecstasy, balance -
Who hasn't experienced these emotions and lived to see another day?
Our humanity is what connects us.
Perfectly imperfect.
Some of us love dogs, others cats.
Some people love the ocean
and for others it's the mountains and valleys.
I like blue!
What's your favorite color?
(I won't hate you for it!)

"Anchor the eternity of love in your own soul and embed this
planet with goodness. Lean toward the whispers of your own
heart, discover the universal truth, and follow its dictates.
Release the need to hate, to harbor division, and the enticement of revenge.
Release all bitterness. Hold only love, only peace in your heart, knowing that
the battle of good to overcome evil is already won. Choose confrontation
wisely, but when it is your time don't be afraid to stand up, speak up, and
speak out against injustice. And if you follow your truth down the road to
peace and the affirmation of love, if you shine like a beacon for all to see,
then the poetry of the great dreamers and philosophers is yours to
manifest in a nation, a world community, and a Beloved Community that is
finally at peace with itself."
John Lewis

Change is in the air.
Compassion and righteous anger are walking the streets of America with Lady Justice.
There will be no turning back these pages of history ourstory -
no matter what the impeached president says or does.
Change is in the air.
This isn't 2 dozen people with automatic weapons
standing on the capitol steps
protesting the lock down because of covid-19.
This is thousands and thousands of peaceful Americans
supporting one another and walking together
to protest the racial inequality that permeates our society.
Protesting militant police who murder innocent people for sport.
Change is in the air
and it's not going away.
Police are on notice.
States Attorneys are on notice.
We are watching now.
And we are many.
Change is in the air.
Stay vigilant.
Stay safe.
Stay together.
In 1953, Rachel Carson penned this...
"It is one of the ironies of our time that,
while concentrating on the defense of our country against enemies from without,
we should be so heedless of those who would destroy it from within."
Amen.

It's Sunday,
take the day off!
With all of the bad news and incompetence of our government,
and missing being close to our loved ones -
our hearts get heavy.
But that's because of the love in our hearts.
Love and compassion and empathy and sorrow.
So, take a break.
Forget the bad news and focus on the love -
the love inside your Big Heart.
Love is everywhere evident -
even in this pandemic.
Look inside,
past the confusion and pain,
to the love.
That love - your love, my love,
will see us through to the other side of this.
Trust that love.
Feel it.

It is difficult to sit still for an invisible catastrophe -
there's no wind, no rain, no flooding -
in fact the weather here is perfect.
We have electricity, water, internet, the pantry is full,
and we have each other.
So, wash your hands, enjoy each other -
(they are singing from the balconies in Italy!)
get lots of fresh air
and be creative!
Don't panic.
Be kind.
and
Be careful.

"...a soulful ecology is rooted in the feeling that this world is our home
and that our responsibility to it comes not from obligation
or logic, but from true affection.
...As long as the heart is involved, care of the place will follow."
Thomas Moore, Care of The Soul
The thing to understand is that this in not your fault or my fault
because we didn't recycle enough or we use too much plastic,
or we believed that Round Up was safe.
The problem is institutionalized.
From the auto industry to plastics manufacturing,
oil producers have held sway over these industries for a century.
Chemical companies have been spreading their propaganda since WWII.
And governments have been holding their hands ever since
and silencing concerned voices.
There are little things that we can do in our lives and homes.
And lots of little things add up.
More later!
Home sweet Home! The cat, the hammock, and the flowers are still with me in my new home!

"If kindness takes a little longer,
it's worth the extra time."
Eleanor McEvoy
When we develop kindness towards ourselves,
we can change the atmosphere of our days and lives;
the atmosphere of our homes and work environments,
and our relationships.
Kindness, first for ourselves.
All love and peace radiate from our tender hearts.
They say we have ten years, it might be less, to get this right, to turn around the dire need that the earth is in.
If we wake up everyday with a kind heart and gentleness towards ourselves,
then we can appreciate the beauty that is all around us.
This appreciation for life can carry us to the finish line,
one day at a time.
The kindness quote is from a song by Eleanor McEvoy. I recommend the book "Loving Kindness" by Sharon Salzberg for some kind inspiration.

Just before the Hurricane,
this little one emerges.
She's on her way to the turbulent waves.
We on the shore want so badly to help,
but we know better and walk beside her,
well meaning, helpless, guardians,
until a wave envelopes her -
back and forth
and she is gone
on her long journey
to everywhere.

Many years ago I began a novel by Zora Neale Hurston and couldn't find the rhythm of her words
and abandoned the effort.
About a month ago I picked up her autobiography, "Dust Tracks on a Road" at our local Library and was blown away.
Here is a writer with an understanding of life and love and the world, with a truly unique view into the cosmos,
that rivals the greatest poets.
Ms. Hurston can lift you up and encourage you to get on with it, no matter what,
because this is a BIG Beautiful Life!
She hears the wisdom of the trees and understands that we are all ONE
and that one day our bodies will join the earth and the earth will fall into the sun
and the sun will implode into the universe
and we are ALL a part of that.
That is where we came from and that is where we will go.
"Dust Tracks" was written in 1941, before Stephen Hawking came up with the Big Bang Theory,
before the Hubble Telescope,
and before researchers confirmed that trees are actually communicating with one another (and with Ms. Hurston.)
Since reading her autobiography, I have read "Their Eyes Were Watching God"
and found the rhythm of her dialogue and loved every word.
Zora, ( I can call her that because she wants us all to be "kissing friends" so that we can cultivate peace in the world),
is a treasure I have discovered late in life and am ever grateful that I did.

Little did I know that when I accidentally shot the door to this cottage in May,
(while trying to find a bird in the oak tree at dusk that was making an unusual call),
that 4 months later, I would be moving in there.
That's most of the reason for my absence!
Then there is the other,
my new old car!
And now it is Thanksgiving,
and there is much to be grateful for.
Thank you to
all the friends who helped me along the way,
clearing out and painting and cleaning and moving.
It seemed endless.
And especially to the "Land Owner" who invited me to move into her studio,
Thank You, for all.
For All.
And to the one who practically donated the car to me!
Thank you!
Thank You!
Thank You!
Now that things have settled down a bit, I just might have more time to Blog!
Everything has to do with loving
and not loving.
